By the time we'd returned from Zugspitze it had begun to rain.
I'm one of those strange people who does not mind a little rain while
on vacation. Rain means that I have a tailor-made excuse not to hike up and
down an Alp, for example. I'm quite content to heave-to with a good book for
a day. But, not for three days.
It rained steadily with intermittent downpours for three days and nights
while we were there. Partenkirchen flooded completely, and Garmisch, where we
were staying, flooded partially. There are only three routes in and out of that
valley, two of which flooded, while the third was down to one lane because the
normally mild little stream that runs next to the highway became violent and ate
the other lane.
When the rain finally let up the helicopters came in to survey the damage
and we took a walk to do the same.
